ABOUT MED GHOST FADS

Ghost fishing is becoming one of the main threats to marine biodiversity. In the Mediterranean, it has become a severe danger, both to endangered species but also to safety of navigation. Together we can fight this threat. MED GHOST FADS is a networking platform for a basin-wide concerted effort between public administrations, port authorities, research institutions, marine wildlife recovery centres, fishers, diving centres and navigators.

By joining our network, you can help our fleet retrieve hazardous ghost gear from the water, send us valuable information for research and facilitate the rescue of entangled wildlife in the open sea. All of this will help us take action against NOW against ghost gear.
"Over 800.000 tons of ghost gear enter the marine ecosystem every year, entangling hundreds of thousands of cetaceans, sharks, turtles and seabirds and over one third of the fish catch worldwide."

Ghost fishing is a global threat to our marine environment, and therefore requires concerted effort at a global scale. This is why SAVE THE MED joined the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) in 2020 to benefit from the advantages of network and collaboration. The GGGI is the world’s largest cross-sectoral alliance committed to driving solutions to the problem of ghost fishing.

In the Mediterranean, Save The Med together with our partners, is now building a network of collaborators that's growing fast.
